Don't Mind if I Do
Spending my evening trying expand my horizons and safely explore things that have been crippling for me in the past. Nobody said it was easy, but in the end, it feels good to face things and challenge myself. :-)
therealpinkiepie asked: A bit more on Utena. I love it a lot but it is not for everyone (it's very dense and symbolic). Also, I strongly suggest anyone interested watch the series before the movie (it is also much less fanservice-y than the movie). But I really love it and have seen both the series and movie multiple times. I find its deconstruction of the virgin/whore dichotomy especially interesting. If anyone has...

kaworudasgay asked: More on Utena: it has a lot of triggers. Just a warning. There is quite a bit of focus on the topic of rape and sexualization. In addition. any characters are queer (sexuality is portrayed as very, very fluid). In fact, it is known as the most famous "girls' love" anime, despite being somewhat ambiguous in the series (it is not as vague in the movie). The two main characters, Anthy...

kaworudasgay asked: If we're on the topic of anime, I would like to mention Revolutionary Girl Utena, one of my favorite anime titles. It's shoujo, and it's got the big eyes and pretty clothes to prove it, but it is actually an intricate deconstruction of sexism, objectification, and victimization of women, especially in fairy tales. It focuses, through a very abstract narrative filled with metaphors...

Can’t believe they actually documented this. And I completely understand the sexist attitudes within the fighting game community that are in question. Really hits home. Great article.

New XXS Reboot Demo
Can I just say how much I love, love, looOOOve how 1. The default demo character for this game is a female. 2. She looks like a female would look while actually going snowboarding, instead of being scantily clad in a bikini five sizes too small with ear muffs and mittens, you know, to keep her warm. And last but not least, 3. When you get to change characters, literally half of your options are...

livviaa asked: Hi, for International Women's day, my high school's Amnesty International group have set up a video conference with another school in a different country to discuss women's rights. I really admire your blog, and were wondering if you had any good stories, or points I could make on the day that could help get the message across to teenagers over how important this is? Thank you(: xx

I accidentally deleted the third part of your message instead of a message I always answered. Would you mind resending that last part? I could answer it with what I have, but I wanted to make sure you got to say everything that you wanted to. :-) No rush!

Anonymous asked: I wanted your thoughts on feminist housewives. I consider myself a feminist, but my life dream is to stay at home taking care of my kids and writing fiction in during downtime. I've gotten into a few "discussions" with friends about whether or not I can still be for the cause of feminism if my goal is to fall into a "sexist stereotype." I think that feminism, at its core,...

Anonymous asked: I don't know if you've been keeping up with the GOP candidates and debates, more specifically the debate that just happened in Arizona where the candidates said they're anti birth control. I was just wondering about your thoughts on that.

aboutdrifters asked: So, I'm a feminist who completely believes victim blaming is despicable. However, I'm a little bit confused as to why Jaclyn Friedman comes under such criticism from feminists for saying that women should protect themselves. I think teaching "don't rape" needs to be greatly emphasized, however, as long as there are still rapists, shouldn't we also be encouraged to...

Anonymous asked: I just broke up with my boyfriend. I tried three times before but went back bc he said he would kill himself and that i loved him and was just confused and he made me feel afraid... He almost drove me crazy with all this emotional blackmail. I stayed with him for three years. It was a virtual relationship, yet he controlled me so well. But I woke up when I started seeing tumblr like yours and just...

Anonymous asked: I'd also like to comment on the anon question about body acceptance for unhealthily overweight people. I have struggled with my weight my whole life. Of course I know that I need to lose weight to be truly healthy. But I have to love my body as it is now, because it can't change overnight (and losing weight is not easy by any means). Many overweight people have contributing health...
chloenicolefinigan asked: I completely see your point on healthy body types. I don't put anyone down for being any particular size, but loving your body and being comfortable in your own skin (although it's great!) can be very different than truly being healthy.
lettherebecramp asked: I see what you're saying, and I wasn't trying to say I think you're being an asshole, but I'm still really disappointed that you thought it would be okay to label somebody's actions "not body acceptance" just because they're not physically healthy. Another person's body (as well as their choices about what they put in their body and how they treat their...
lettherebecramp asked: "If in deciding you’re going to love your body no matter what, u proceed to never get out of your La-Z-Boy recliner, and eat three boxes of bonbons each day, you’re right that’s not body acceptance, that’s just straight-up unhealthy. You may be embracing your body, but you certainly are not loving or nurturing it by subjecting it to this." Whoa! I love your blog,...

confusedrevolution asked: I've seen a lot of my (mostly male, heterosexual) acquaintances on Facebook posting pictures (that of Marilyn Monroe, for instance) with slogans on ("real women have curves"), and I was wondering what you think of it. I have a feeling that these people are honestly thinking they're being very progressive by being anti-skinny, but I can't help but see it as ultimately body...

Anonymous asked: I'm struggling with this....I'm all for loving your body and not being ashamed of any body types, but for me there is a limit to that. I do a lot of work on healthy eating and the eating locally movement, and it is really hard for me to come to terms with accepting obesity as being ok. It's very unhealthy, and you can love your body all you want, but I doubt your body will love...

Anonymous asked: i've seen you recommend "what you really, really want" more than once, and i've scoped it out on amazon. while it sounds interesting, it seems to cover more and broader topics about sex and shame than what i'm looking for. i am wondering if you or any of your readers have recommended reading specifically on the enjoyment of the masochistic/submissive side of bdsm after...

Anonymous asked: I'm so glad that I wasn't the only one who had issues with Game of Thrones! I thought I was alone there. I have only watched one episode with my family so far and they all loved it, and I do like the story and is curious for the continuation. But the sexism bugged me so. All the girls are only valued for their looks and their ability to make babies. Almost all the nude scenes are of...

Anonymous asked: My little brother, who is only three and doesn't understand a god damn thing about gender roles likes when people have their nails painted and calls it "princess". theonstark asked: Re: Game of Thrones. I'm a fan because GRRM made the conscious decision to make a sexist world and then create dynamic female characters who react and act within it, and it's as much a commentary on women's roles today as it is a fantasy story. To me, it's a discussion of how these women establish agency of their own - they AREN'T just acted upon! No matter how many times...

justmypersonalblog asked: Games of thrones seems incredibly sexist to me. Not so much the show, but the books enraged me more than once (I blame R. R. Martin for that and not HBO, of course.) It is supposed that the history happens in other world, why take the sexism from our history and reflect it in the book? It's brutal how they rape women and treat them as merchandise, whas that necesary? I like the history a lot,...

Anonymous asked: I was wondering if you have seen the show Game of Thrones... and what you thought about it. My boyfriend and my dad are in love with this show, but I cannot look past the sexism. All of the women have perfect bodies and the men can look however, fat, hairy.. nothing wrong with these things, but it's not right that women are held to a much stricter standard. Also, most of the nudey scenes are...

Anonymous asked: sorry for my ignorance. but I dont really get why being raped is as bad as its made to be. I'm a guy and to me the closest that I can compare this to would be that some fat girl was trying to have sex with me and I didnt want to because she was fat and or really ugly. but despite her appearance even if she did subdue somehow in the end I would get a pleasurable release or orgasm despite her...

Anonymous asked: I know that promiscuity is a frequent topic on the blog &, as a virgin, I was curious: is sex REALLY a big deal or is it all hype? Can women have sex without being emotionally attached? Are you a bad feminist if you do/don't have a lot of sex?

Anonymous asked: I saw your post from a while ago about BDSM, and I wanted to ask some questions. I'm female, and I consider myself a feminist, and I'm into the sub/dom stuff. I've never had sex, and I don't watch that kind of porn because, like you said, it may not have been consensual. But even just imagining those kinds of things makes me feel really guilty, both in general and because it...

The Perfect Bride
Her: Daddy, when I grow up, and if I get married, I don't want a diamond.
Him: But every girl wants a diamond. In fact, they're a girl's best friend.
Her: Not me. They're not my best friend.
Him: Then what do you want sweetie?
Her: I like opals. Black ones.
Him: The boy's are gonna pick you up fast. You're a cheap date.
Her: Oh, and I don't want it to be on a ring. I like necklaces better.
Him: But how are people supposed to know that you belong to your husband if they don't see a ring? It'll be confusing.
Her: If they think I belong to my husband, daddy, aren't they already confused?

Anonymous asked: To add onto the aborting-based-on-sex thing, this is a big problem in India. There is illegal for the doctor to say the sex of the child because it is very patriarchal society and some more backward thinking and poor families will abort the child. There, females are a huge cost because they can't get as great high-paying jobs and the family has to pay a dowry for her to get married. (Dowry...

Anonymous asked: To add to the aborting-based-on-sex-thing - by the time you can figure out the baby's sex, isn't it a little late in the pregnancy to get an abortion? Forgive me if I'm wrong. I'm pro-choice, but I do think there's a point in the growth after which it's not...right.

Anonymous asked: Yeah, that's pretty much how I felt too. The article was written by a very high-up English bishop, so he was equating the fact that some women were using sex as a reason for termination to the ENTIRE pro-choice movement. I think that muddied the waters for me since I was defending pro-choicers in my mind but I didn't want to defend discrimination based on the sex of the baby. He was...

Anonymous asked: Did you see what CM Punk (wrestler) said to Chris Brown over Twitter? He wants Chris to "fight somebody that can defend themselves." This started the 'men are stronger by default' argument between my boyfriend and I because I believe strength shouldn't be automatically determined by what sex or gender you are. Thoughts?

Anonymous asked: Hi! I was reading an article in the paper earlier this week and I was kind of conflicted. It was about the increasing number of women getting abortions because they're not happy with the sex of the baby. I was caught between my strong support of women exercising their right to bodily autonomy, and the fact that aborting a baby based solely on sex seems pretty morally repugnant to me....

encapture asked: In all fairness, the Justin Bieber quote is followed up by 'I guess I haven't been in that position, so I wouldn't be able to judge that.'
