tinnybuffer asked: If a woman can and should be able to wear anything she wears. Dont you think that will increase the amount of misogynistic images in the media. I mean why should a comic artist who saw a girl who (rightfully) wore a dress that showed a lot of cleavage be criticized for being inspired by that girl and draw a female superhero that shows a lot of cleavage

I don’t think there is much correlation between what women choose to wear in their daily lives, and the amount of misogynistic images in media. They seem like two entirely different subjects, but maybe that’s just me. If you look back through the archives, I feel like we’ve had several discussions on both subjects.

As far as your specific example goes, I actually came across a great article talking about the costumes and cleavage in female comic book characters and it made a great point. It’s not the pants that are the problem, referring the fact that Wonder Woman doesn’t wear any, unlike her male comrades. The problem is the hyper-sexualized way in which they are drawn. Big boobs are just that, big boobs, until someone chooses to exploit this part of the cis-female body and make them “big ole tities”. In the DC Reboot that came out this past year, Cat Woman was technically covered up, pants and all, but damn it if that wasn’t some major pornified fan servicing. There are also tons of characters with huge boobs, but once again, it depends how they are drawn, how the costumes are cut, how the frames are styled, and the poses the characters are in. That has nothing to do with what we are wearing in our daily lives, but what some artist drew because he wants to please his target audience. My point is, the media takes care of misogyny quite well, all on its own.

This is a little side note, but I have a few friends who naturally just have really big boobs. Unless they choose to wear a turtleneck or a hoodie, then they’re going to have ample cleavage, without even trying. I am not for women going around and objectifying themselves for outward attention, not at all, but I also think it kind of sucks when things backfire, and women with naturally big boobs feel like they have to cover up completely or risk being called names.

Hope this clears things up! I am not condoning women objectifying themselves to prove something. I am actually very against that. But if I woman feels good, comfortable, and sexy in whatever that may be, she should not be condemned for it. And a man shouldn’t either.
