Anonymous asked: The Dr Pepper commercial came on when my mom and I were watching TV. When it ended, I said to her "because being a woman is a bad thing." She said that she wasn't offended at all, and that it was just a commercial, and that anytime I bring my feminist commentary into what we're watching I'm being "confrontational." She also says I read too much into things and that it's just a stupid commercial. What are your thoughts on this?

You are certainly not the only one who finds their new ad campaign to disregreeable. I personally love your commentary and find calling things outs they happen to be a good thing. If you scroll down. On ur Facebook group page, you’ll see Nora posted one of the television ads and there was some discussion on it, so know you’re definitely not alone.

I wrote a post a week or so ago I think responding to a reader who had a similar problem with their mom reacting poorly to a feminist critique as well. It hits home for me too, and Imentioned how this was a struggle for me when was home in Ohio over the holidays.

You were not wrong. I want to make sure that is very clear. Yes, the commercial was stupid. But not in a harmless or playful way, in a very intentionally discriminatory, misogynistic, and sexist way.

I do not believe for one second that you are reading too much into things either. To me, this feels more like a fact than opinion, because the fact that you can recognize bullshit and analyze what different forms of media spew at you shows you’ve got a good head on your shoulders, not that you read too much into things. It sounds smart. It sounds like you question things instead of just accepting them blindly. We need more of that, not less of it. :-)
