Anonymous asked: Hi, I recently found out I can't have kids and this dumb-arse decides to come up to me and say "What's the point to you now if you can't have kids?". I don't know how he found out, but it really hurt. I hate the fact that our society says that women must have kids and raise children, when in our changing world women are becoming more than just mums, but society says we must raise a child.
You know you are living in a patriarchal society when someone feels they have the right to inform you that you are useless if you are unable to bear children. I think we are both in on the (unfortunately well-kept secret) that this is a load of crock, yes?
I have no idea how this fella would have found this out either, but wow, that was in fact incredibly rude and completely out of line.
I believe it often gets overlooked because of all our serious battles surrounding reproductive rights, but the way women are currently treated if they choose to not have children, or are unable is pretty medieval. Women with children also have struggles of their own, as they are now expected to work full-time whilst still keeping house. That means day-care or a babysitter is necessary, but *gasp* then they are neglecting their child, which they should have been at home playing with all along! With that nonsensical logic, there’s no way to possibly win.
I personally do not want children myself, and in the few times that it has come up public, people think that something must be wrong with me (in the head) that is temporarily confusing me from realizing my true calling in life is to bear nine little ones. Nope. I don’t think it’s unnatural or odd, no more so than wanting to have children. It is a personal preference and a personal choice.
I hope you are feeling better, and realize that he was just an ignorant jerk, and nothing more. xx
