Feminism, Sexuality, Gender Issues, Body Acceptance, and a lot of Other Ish

Anonymous asked: I don't know if you've ever addressed it before, as I just discovered your blog, but since you have such passion when it comes to feminism, I would love to know your thoughts on the Twilight series. :)

You know what, I never got on board the Twihard Train. I saw the second movie in theatres, but that was only because my roommate at the time invited me to go with her and her friend, and I said yes in hopes of achieving some female bonding. True story. I do know a fair bit amount about the series because my sister is quite obsessed (Hi, pretty sister! <3), and ever since I got whiff of the whole abusive relationship controversy regarding it being a bad example for young girls and women, I’ve done a lot of reading on the subject.

I don’t think it was ever the author’s intent to condone or romanticize abusive relationships. I also would argue that there are much worse things that young women can and do sink their teeth into that can be more damaging than Twilight. That being said, the romantic relationship does suggest a substantial amount of toxic, possessive, and obsessive qualities - none of which make for a healthy or functional relationship. I think it would be foolish to say that this has no effect whatsoever. I’m certain it does. Lile I said, I’m not even into the whole phenomenon, I’m full aware of the critiques, and agree with them, but I remember when watching the film in theatres, not knowing the story and how things would play out, I admit I was hoping Bella would pick Edward. I don’t doubt the story can do a number on the viewer.

I think these critiques have become quite accessible though, even to younger women, so I think that’s really good. I hope they understand that although it might look cute in the movies, and might give you a happy ending, that doesn’t mean it will in real life. Do I think Twilight is the worst thing in the world? No. But I don’t particularly think it’s doing us too many favors either. Thanks for the question! :-) xx
